World CHRONIC MYELOID LEUKAEMIA Day (CML) is held on September 22 every year and is a day dedicated to raising awareness about leukaemia, an increasingly common form of cancer. This campaign was initiated in 2008 to raise public awareness on leukaemia in terms of symptom recognition, early diagnosis and treatment.

Leukaemia is increasing in incidence and is a potentially life-threatening disease, One million people worldwide live with leukaemia and nearly 1,000 people are diagnosed with the disease every day, but there continues to be very little awareness of the signs and symptoms of leukaemia.

Increasing awareness on leukaemia will allow people in Nigeria and around the world to have better recognize its signs and symptoms, leading to earlier diagnosis and more timely treatment. Greater awareness will also empower patients and their families to demand specialist treatment and care from qualified leukaemia physicians as well as gain access to the most up-to-date information, support and treatment.

It is from the foregoing that LCPI is organising a symposium, rally its official lunch to commemorate the World Chronic Myeloid Leukaemia Awareness Day to bring the campaign home to help people become aware of the symptoms and life threatening effect of this disease.
